The growing season of 2015 was more challenging than 2014. Growth on the vines (bud burst) started later and the summer months were generally a bit cooler and wetter. This meant that in order to achieve the maximum possible ripeness in our grapes we picked on average 2 weeks later than in 2014 – we did not complete our harvest until the very end of October. Saved by a good September, the key to achieving good quality grapes in 2015 was to ensure the vines were cropping lightly. This we did through early season ‘shoot thinning’ and late season ‘green harvesting’, overall picking 15% less volume than in 2104 – on some varieties 20% less. Diligent canopy management, including leaf removal was essential to maximize the opportunity for sunlight and warmth to reach the developing grapes.
Whilst our grapes did not reach the same high ripeness levels as in 2014, they still ripened well and were excellent for making sparkling base wine and have produced some very pleasing elegant still wines, with lively and zesty acidity, harmonious balance and good length. Good to drink now, they will improve further after a few months in bottle as the aromas’ develop and open up.
